Late Afternoon Update: Moderate-Heavy Snow Continues

Moderate to at times Heavy snow continues across a good portion of the state. The snow has cleared the southwestern counties of the state but we can’t rule out flurries in those areas for the rest of the evening hours. Accumulations there are over. Meanwhile the rest of the state, travel is becoming hazardous and some counties have tow bans in effect in central Iowa. Snowfall rates of 1 to at times 2 inches per hour may be common in the heaviest snow bands as they move through the state. The snow will begin tapering off in the western and northwestern counties later this evening, in central Iowa around Midnight or a bit after, and in the eastern counties between 2-4am. Temperatures during the overnight will be down into the single digits above and below zero which will bring wind chills down well below zero. Blowing snow could be an issue tonight but likely will be a bigger factor on Tuesday when the winds will be stronger. Dangerous wind chills will be likely Tuesday through Thursday morning for the entire state.
