Iowa Weather Report December 26th 2014

NO VIDEO TODAY: Jeff is taking the day off to enjoy his Christmas and your other favorite forecaster is filling in for today. He should be returning tomorrow. Enough about that, let’s get to weather.

WINTER RETURNS, SIGH: As we wind down the Christmas holiday, we turn our heads to some potential winter weather issues across the area tomorrow. A low pressure system is expected to climb northeast into the state this evening into tomorrow bringing with it a plethora of moisture. Temperatures early this morning are expected to be in the upper 20s to low 30s northwest to nearly 40 in the southeast. There will be a chance of light snow or freezing rain early across the far northwestern portion of the state where weak moisture and forcing will be present. Snow should begin to become the prevalent condition across the northwestern half of the state by noon as moisture floods into the area and forcing increases. With temperatures remaining over freezing southeast of a Dubuque to Lamoni line, these areas should see mostly a steady light rain with light to moderate snow to the northwest of that line. Precipitation should remain across the area through the early morning hours on Saturday before clearing out by noon. The final snowfall amounts with this system should be in the one to three inch range in northwestern Iowa with a trace to one inch elsewhere, with the exception of southeast Iowa where rain will be the main concern.

HOLY COLD: The wonderful cold weather that Iowa is accustomed to will return Monday through Thursday before rebounding later into the week. High’s on Monday will be in the mid to upper teens northwest to the lower 30s southeast. Low’s will just be downright bitter with single digits below zero northwest to the mid teens southeast. You’ll love Tuesday even better with single digit highs being seen across the northwest half of the state with teens for the rest of us. Lows will be a few digits below zero for the northwest half of the state with single digits for the rest of us. Wednesday will be a bit of a rebound with teens for the northwest and low to mid 20s for the rest, with single digits to teens for lows. More improvement on Thursday with upper 20s to low 30s for highs. No concerns overall for the new week.
