Iowa Weather Report November 24th 2014: Holiday Week

THROUGH THANKSGIVING: Colder temperatures will be the norm as we move through the holiday week with several chances of some light snow across the state. Today the best chance of seeing some accumulating snow will be across the eastern counties of the state where a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect. In those areas, around 1-3” of snow is possible with the system as it moves away to the northeast. The rest of the state may get some flurries or light snow showers but most places west of a Decorah to Waterloo to Ottumwa line may get little more than a dusting if that. Highs today will be in the 20s and 30s. Tuesday we will be in between systems with skies being partly to mostly sunny. Highs will be in the 20s and 30s once again, which is still below seasonal norms for this time of year. Late Tuesday night into Wednesday, a disturbance will sweep in from the northwest with a chance of some light snow at that time. Accumulations with this system look to be rather light with most places likely only seeing about an inch or so. Skies will turn partly to mostly sunny again on Thanksgiving with readings in the 20s and 30s across the state.

INTO THE WEEKEND: Warmer weather will move in on Black Friday as a warm front will move across the state. At this time, most of the moisture will be to our north but we can’t rule out any light precipitation with the frontal passage. During the day, readings look to warm into the 40s for most places. This will be short lived as a cold front will sweep across the state on Saturday dropping temperatures during the afternoon hours. Sunday will be dry with readings mainly in the middle 20s to middle 30s across the state.

ON INTO DECEMBER: As we look into the extended period, the GFS is continuing to show a significant system that may affect the state around the 2nd through the 4th of December. This could bring a plethora of precipitation across the state. We still have plenty of time to watch this system, but if this trend continues, it could bring some significant snow somewhere either in the state or very close by. The rest of the period looks rather quiet with readings near seasonal levels but this of course is two weeks out and could change in the coming days.
