Iowa Weather Report November 17th 2014

MORE COLD DAYS IN STORE: Heading into the new work week, the cold air is still around and today will be the coldest of the season so far. Highs will struggle to reach the lower to middle teens across the northern counties with the southern counties possibly not even breaking 20. There will be partly to mostly sunny skies around except in the northeastern third of the state where some flurries are possible. Winds will be rather gusty, especially in the northern counties where a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for blowing snow. This could cause some travel issues up there. Be sure to take your time if you are going to be travelling today in the northern part of the state. Tonight, lows will bottom out in the single digits above and below zero. We could get close if not break some record lows Tuesday morning. Looking farther into the week, readings will slowly warm, but look to remain below seasonal levels at this through Thursday, mainly due in part to the widespread snowpack across the state. Another disturbance on Wednesday could clip the northeastern counties with some flurries at that time.

NEXT WEEKEND ONWARD: The GFS continues to show a system that will move into the state from the southwest on Sunday. Temperatures look to be near seasonal levels by this time, however depending on the amount of snow still remaining on the ground could determine the type of precipitation some areas could receive. It’s too early to determine this at this time, but as of now, most of the precipitation should be in the form of rain with some snow possible on the back side of the storm next Monday into Tuesday morning (next week). Looking farther into the extended period, a quick moving system with little moisture looks to move through on Thanksgiving bringing a quick shot of cold air for Black Friday and perhaps into Saturday (29th). Heading into December, readings look to be near seasonal levels but see no real consistency at this time, so we’ll have to wait and see what December will bring.
