COLD BLAST: The warmth of last weekend will be a memory as we head toward the end of this week and this coming weekend as colder air will be flooding the state from the northwest. This will follow the current system that will bring some showers and isolated thunderstorms today. Some of the rain could be heavy but most of the heaviest rainfalls should remain to our south and southeast. Highs today will be in the 60s and 70s with mainly cloudy skies outside the rain chances. The cooler air moves in for Friday. We could see some partly to mostly sunny skies in the southern and southwestern counties of the state while the northeastern half may be stuck in the clouds for most of the day. There is a risk of a few showers around as well but not everyone may see them. It will be noticeably cooler with highs struggling to get out of the 40s in the far northern counties with 50s elsewhere. There is a chance we could see some rain snow mix Friday evening as temperatures drop into the 30s. It will be more of a novelty than anything else if you happen to see any rain/snow mix. The best chances of seeing this would be the far northern and northeastern counties of the state.

COLD WEEKEND: The first weekend of October will not be very pleasant with chilly readings in the upper 40s through the 50s on Saturday and only a few degrees warmer on Sunday across the state. We should see more sunshine around, however the northeastern counties may still be stuck in the clouds for part of the day on Saturday. Lows Saturday morning may be close to freezing and we may see the first widespread frost for a large portion of the state at that time. Sunday morning could see readings back into the 30s but frost and freeze conditions don’t look to be as widespread as they could be on Saturday.

INTO NEXT WEEK: A disturbance will sweep into the state from the northwest as it’s rounding the base of the trough digging through the eastern half of the country. This may be some showers to the state on Monday into Monday night. Highs are likely to be held down in the 50s to lower 60s due to the amount of cloudiness around. We’ll start to see temperatures moderate back to near seasonal levels in the upper 60s to lower 70s by the middle of the week. We’ll also see a new system move in with some showers and perhaps a thunderstorm developing Wednesday night into the day on Thursday. There is plenty of time to watch this system in the coming days for any changes to timing and strength of said system.

EXTENDED PERIOD: The GFS is still showing an active weather pattern as we head into the middle of October. One system around the 13th and 14th could bring some showers and isolated thunderstorms with it, followed by much colder air behind it, somewhat similar to the current system. Temperatures look to average out around seasonal levels with readings a bit colder following said system on the 13th and 14th. Of course as always, everything could be different by tomorrow, we’re just looking for any possible trends this far out.
