Big Cool Down into the 30s for lows by early Saturday Morning

Lots of rain fell today across the region with rainfall ranging from one to three inches, with the highest total coming out of Lincoln, Nebraska at a whopping 8.5″! Around 2″ of rain was reported around the Des Moines metro with higher amounts to the west. Rain will continue lingering around the state through this evening as another low pressure center heads into the region. High temperatures today ranged from the mid 50s north at Mason City to the mid 60s for eastern half of the state to the 70s elsewhere.

As this next area of low pressure moves into the area with a cold front behind it, temperatures will become significantly cooler by this weekend. Friday highs are only expected to each the upper 40s in the north to the low to mid 50s south. Lows will also be exceptionally chillier, bottoming out to the freezing mark in some places in the north to only the mid to upper 30s south. Frost will be likely in much of the region Friday night. It would not be surprising to see Frost Advisories be issued tomorrow or Friday morning. It is also of note that there is a slight chance of rain Friday evening and overnight. Depending on how quickly it cools down, there is a small chance that we see a wintry mix in our far northern counties.

Little relief will be available on Saturday with highs on Saturday only expected to reach the upper 40s northeast to the upper 50s southwest and lows in upper 30s to low 40s for most of the state. Some slight warm-up in temperatures is expected Sunday with highs in the mid to upper 50s northeast to nearly 70 southwest. Either way, it will be a welcome sight by that point. Additional warmup is expected later next week, so this will not be the last frost of the season, but will serve as a small reminder of winters in Iowa that we will likely see coming in the coming months.
