Severe Weather Returning Tuesday?

The Storm Prediction Center has a slight risk of severe weather for the entire state for Tuesday into Tuesday night. All modes of severe weather are possible with large hail and damaging winds being the main threats with a tornado or two possible as well. There are some uncertainties that remain that could temper the severe weather risk. For example any cloud cover that remains from earlier showers and storms that are expected to occur earlier in the day could squelch the chances for redevelopment in the afternoon and into the evening. Other factors including the placing of the low pressure center, where it begins to deepen and where it moves could also shift the risk or lessen it altogether. Current thinking is that the storms are expected to develop either late Tuesday afternoon or Tuesday evening in the area from Eastern Nebraska through Iowa into Minnesota and Wisconsin. These storms would be capable of all modes of severe weather with the threat shifting to mainly damaging straight line winds as we head further in the evening and overnight hours.

Another threat that may arise is the possible heavy rains that may accompany these storms. This could lead to some localized flash flooding in some areas. Be aware of that threat as well through at least Wednesday morning when the heaviest of the rainfall should be moving out of the state at that time.

Although it’s September and it’s not the peak of the severe weather season in the state, we need to take this threat seriously. We should be able to have better timing on what could happen with this event later on today after the next outlook comes out in the early afternoon hours. It would be a good idea to have a good source of weather information handy on Tuesday in case of any watches and warnings being issued.
