Iowa Weather Report August 28th 2014

HEADING INTO LABOR DAY: The repetitive pattern looks set to continue for several more days with scattered showers and thunderstorms possible across the state through at least the beginning of the Labor Day Weekend. Today and tomorrow we’ll see multiple rounds of showers and storms with some heavy rainfall possible. The best chance of seeing any flash flooding looks to be over the western counties of the state where a Flash Flood Watch is in effect. We will see very little sunshine around as well and because of that, readings today will be held down in the 70s to near 80 for most of the state. A slightly better chance of seeing some sunshine exists for Friday especially in the far southern counties where temperatures may get into the lower and middle 80s while the rest of the state remains in the 70s. High School Football games Friday night look to be somewhat wet with the best chance of rain the farther east you are. The rain will be pulling out Friday night into Saturday morning across the state. There could be lingering showers around on Saturday for the Iowa UNI game at Kinnick and for the Iowa State North Dakota State game at Jack Trice, but the chances are much lower than today and tomorrow. We will get a small break before another round of showers and storms moves back in Sunday into Monday. This will be with a frontal system that will be approaching from the west. There could be a chance of severe weather with this system and the SPC yesterday had an outlook out for Sunday with this system. We will have further details on that in the coming days.

ON PAST: As we head back to work on Tuesday, cooler drier air will be around the state. We’ll see partly to mostly sunny skies with readings in the 70s to lower 80s. This will be a short break as a warm front looks to move across the state late Tuesday night through Wednesday with another chance of showers and storms at that time. Heading into the extended period, the GFS is showing several systems moving through the area through the middle of September. We can’t time them out this far in advance, but it is telling us that it could be somewhat active as we head farther into the month of September. Readings looks to be averaging near seasonal levels at this point.
