Iowa Weather Report August 22nd 2014

NOT MUCH CHANGE: We still see some chances of showers and thunderstorms around for the next several days with a frontal system that will be around the area. There will be some sunshine as well and that will easily lead to readings well into the 80s and 90s. With the high humidity we have, we could see some places with heat indices approaching 100. The best chances of seeing rain through Saturday would be over the northern half of the state as the front slowly moves north. However we can’t rule out the chance statewide as there is some chance the front could hang up farther south than what models are currently showing. At this point, Sunday looks to be the driest day across the entire state as most of the precipitation should be to our north. This would bring readings statewide into the 80s and 90s at that time. The front looks to make an appearance back in the state late Sunday night through Wednesday. This would be similar to what we’ve seen the previous few days with storms around but sunshine around as well. This will lead to variable readings across the state.

A COOL BREAK: After the cold front finally moves to the east on Wednesday, we should see some cooler readings on Thursday with mainly sunny skies at that time. However it looks to be short lived as the winds turn southerly once again next Friday as a storm system will be approaching from the west. We’ll have plenty of time to watch this system in the coming days.

LOOKING FARTHER OUT: The GFS shows that frontal system mentioned in the previous paragraph moving through next Sunday (31st of August) with a chance of showers and thunderstorms at that time. Some cooler weather looks to follow in the wake of that system with another storm possibly moving through a few days later. The pattern looks to be more zonal as we move into September but there’s still several days for that to possibly change so stay tuned.
