All of Iowa, Forecast

Iowa Weather Report August 20th 2014

SOME RAIN SOME SUN SOME HEAT: A little bit of everything through the end of the week with some sunshine, rain and warm temperatures over the state. Today we will see some partly to mostly sunny skies across the area. We could see some early showers and storms in our western counties but these should quickly move southeastward into Missouri by the middle to latter half of the morning. Highs today will be mainly in the 80s and lower 90s. A complex of showers and thunderstorms will move into the state from the northwest during the overnight hours. These could bring some decent rains to the area but some areas may remain bone dry once again. Lows tonight will only drop into the middle 60s north to middle 70s farther to the south. The GFS continues to bring the chances of showers and storms through the state through Sunday but this will depend on the position of a frontal system that will be close by. If it’s farther to the north, the chances of rain will be greatly reduced and temperatures will be a lot warmer, possibly well into the 90s. At this point, the best chances to see any rainfall would be during the overnight into the morning hours with drier conditions during the afternoon into the early evening. It’s a very changeable forecast that will need to be fine-tuned as we move day to day towards the weekend.

STUCK IN NEUTRAL: As we head into the new work week, the weather pattern doesn’t look to change a whole lot. A frontal system will be stalled close to the state bringing with it periods of showers and thunderstorms. The one question that arises is where this front will be stalling. A ridge to the south of the state will be holding firm while a Canadian High Pressure will try to nose in from the north. This clash looks to take place somewhere close to the state but at this point we can’t specify where that will be at this time. We would need a few more days to decipher whether this front will be closer or farther from the state to see if we see more rainfall or possibly sunshine and very warm temperatures. It’s a weather tug of war.

SEE YOU IN SEPTEMBER: As we head into the extended period, we see the cooler air winning the battle as the frontal system finally looks to move off to the east. This would bring some cooler weather for the first high school football games of the year next Friday across the state. Our attention then turns to the possible tropical system that may be around that could influence our weather toward the beginning of September. It’s way too early to discuss any possible tropical systems at this point but we’ll monitor the situation. Readings look to warm back into the 80s as we head into September with skies remaining partly to mostly sunny with shower chances few and far between.
