Iowa Weather Report July 29th 2014

UP THROUGH THE WEEKEND: There is no real change for the rest of the work week and into the weekend across the state. Skies will be mainly sunny with some afternoon clouds building up during the heating of the day. Some of these could squeeze out a quick shower but many places will remain dry. Highs during this period will range from the middle and upper 70s to the lower and middle 80s.

INTO NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: As we head into the new work week, the trough over the east will have weakened and the ridge over the west will have flattened out leading to a zonal flow over the country. The GFS is showing a frontal system slowly sagging into the state late Monday into Tuesday with our next best chance of widespread showers and thunderstorms at that time. Since this is still a ways out there, timing could change somewhat but we’ll keep watching it in the days to come. Looking farther out into the period, the zonal flow looks to continue for several more days with showers and storms possible as well. Timing these out is very difficult so we’ll have to get a clearer picture before our confidence is assured. Toward the end of the period, a cold front looks to move in from the northwest that could bring more shower and thunderstorm activity but may also bring another surge of cool Canadian air as we head into the middle of August. We’ll have to wait and see.
