Iowa Weather Report July 21st 2014

THE WEEK AHEAD: Hot and humid weather will begin the week with a storm system moving through that should bring us some drier air at mid-week followed by more chances for showers and storms heading into the weekend. Highs today and Tuesday will be in the upper 80s through the middle 90s with heat indices at or over 100 in many areas. For this reason, a heat advisory has been issued for a large section of central and western Iowa. Take all precautions. There will be a slight chance of seeing some showers and storms late tonight as some may clip the far northern counties, however the better chances look to stay in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Some of the storms up there could be quite strong to severe. Tuesday and Tuesday night will see a better chance of showers and storms here, but there will be some sunshine intermixed as well. After some morning rain Wednesday, skies will clear and readings will drop into the upper 70s and lower to middle 80s both Wednesday and Thursday. A warm front looks to move into the state late Thursday night, Friday and into Saturday with another chance of some showers and storms at that time. For those riding in RAGBRAI, today and tomorrow will be quite balmy, with possible storms, then Wednesday and Thursday will be the best days of the ride followed by chances of rain and storms as riders near Guttenberg on Saturday.

EXTENDED PERIOD: Some backwash showers or storms are possible Sunday into Monday of next week with the best chances occurring in the northeastern third of the state. Readings will be in the upper 70s through the middle 80s. Looking into the extended period, we have a northwesterly flow that we’ve been seeing for several days look to continue for several days more before it flattens out and the storm tracks moves northward which may bring warmer weather in. Toward the end of the period, the ridge over the southwest begins to retrograde to the west bringing the storm track back in our direction again and lowering readings to near seasonal levels. We’ll see if this continues in the coming days on the models.
