Iowa Weather Report July 6th 2014

SUMMER STORMS: Hot humid weather returns to the state today with highs in the upper 80s through the lower 90s. There will also be a chance of showers and thunderstorms as well with some of the storms possibly becoming strong to severe both today and tonight in the eastern counties and on Monday in the western two-thirds of the state. The chance of showers and storms will last through Monday into Tuesday as well before the storm system pulls away. There is also a threat that we could see some heavy rainfall as well from these storms. This may cause flash flooding to occur once more and may also bring rivers back up and out of their banks or prolong rivers that are already in flood at this time. We would need to watch this situation as it arises. Current thinking is that most places through Tuesday should see a half to one inch of rain but as is typical with summertime convection, heavier totals will be possible as well.

A COOLER BREAK: Cooler and drier air will move in late Tuesday and last through Wednesday and Thursday with readings dropping back into the upper 70s to lower 80s across the state with lower humidity as well. The next storm may bring some isolated showers and thunderstorms on Thursday preferably in the afternoon and evening as a warm front looks to move in from the west.

STORMS RETURN: The stormy weather pattern looks to return again Thursday through next weekend with several rounds of showers and thunderstorms possible. It’s too early to determine when and where the storms may roll through but current thinking is that it will not be an all-day rain and the best chances look to occur during the overnight into the morning hours with the late morning and afternoon being mainly dry. We’ll see if this holds in subsequent model runs.

LATER ON: The GFS shows a ridge trying to move into the state next Monday last a few days before a short wave trough moves through which will flatten the ridge into more of a zonal flow or a straight west to east flow. The model then indicates that the ridge may try to reassert itself later in the month centered to the southeast of the state. In any case, warmer readings look likely if this were to occur with some chances of showers and storms but not as numerous as we have been seeing of late.
