THE WEEK AHEAD: A little drier this week across the state but still some chances of showers and thunderstorms will be possible through the week and into the upcoming weekend as well. The driest days look to be today and tomorrow where we should see partly to mostly sunny skies around. Highs will be mainly in the 80s with perhaps a few upper 70s in the northern counties of the state. Readings will stay mainly in the 80s the rest of the week with the chance of showers and thunderstorms returning at that time. This will not be an all-day rain as there will be some breaks with some sunshine around, but as mentioned yesterday, any sunshine will help to destabilize the atmosphere leading to more showers and storms. Any storms will look to lengthen river flooding across the state.

FARTHER OUT: This run of the GFS continues to show a heat ridge building as we head into the month of July, which is the hottest month of the year across the state. If this were to occur, we could easily see readings well into the 90s with heat indices at or over 100. Any chance of precipitation will be remote as the main storm track will have shifted well to the north. We would love to have some dry days across the state, but a heat ridge and hot weather would tend to dry out the top soil fairly quickly, so we would have to be on the lookout for a ridge that could plant itself over the state like the current pattern we’ve been experiencing. We could easily head back into the need for rain at that point. However, nothing is set in stone as yet, but we’ll keep watching.
