Three EF-1 Tornadoes Confirmed in Iowa, More Results Coming (Updated June 17th 6:00 PM)

 

The National Weather Service in Des Moines has confirmed two tornado tracks near Clarksville, Iowa along with thunderstorm wind damage. The first tornado was an EF-1 with an estimated peak wind speed of 110 MPH. The total path length of this tornado was 3.1 miles with a max width of 250 yard. It started at 7:55 PM three miles west of Clarksville and ended at 7:59 PM one mile west of Clarksville. The NWS noted that EF-1 category damage was seen at farms and outbuildings in Clarksville.

The second tornado was also an EF-1 with an estimated peak wind of 110 MPH. The total path length of this tornado was 2.5 miles with a max width of 150 yards. This tornado started five minutes after the first tornado at 8:04 PM one mile northeast of Clarksville and ended four miles east of Clarksville at 8:07 PM. This tornado was with the same storm that started the first tornado and again produced EF-1 damage in this area, with the most significant to a home east of Clarksville.

No injuries or fatalities, fortunately, was reported with both tornadoes. We expect further survey information from the Des Moines and surrounding offices regarding this storm in the coming days. The NWS in Des Moines says that additional damage is expected and is working with county emergency managers to assess damage. They also mention that the survey team will be checking for damage near Geneva late this afternoon – further information on this later.


UPDATE (June 17 6:17 PM):The National Weather Service in the Quad Cities just announced that their survey team concluded that an EF-1 Tornado was found between Edgewood and Lamont and was given a peak wind of 95 MPH, which is of EF-1 strength. The tornado started at 9:30 PM four miles south of Lamont, Iowa and lifted south of Edgewood at 9:55 PM. The Quad Cities NWS office noted that most of the damage was south and east of Dundee into south Edgewood. Several grain bins collapsed or were destroy and two old hog confinements were seriously damaged, along with an aluminum roof torn off. Trees were also down all along the path.
