Iowa Weather Report May 17th 2014

WEEKEND: Sunny skies will be the rule this weekend with some clouds around as well. Highs today will be in the lower to middle 60s across the state. Sunday will bring slightly warmer readings with middle 60s to lower 70s with a noted increase in the cloudiness by later in the afternoon into the evening ahead of the next storm system.

ACTIVE TIME: The next system will move into the state late Sunday night into Monday with a chance of some showers and thunderstorms. Severe weather doesn’t look likely at this time but some decent rains are possible. Highs will be similar to Sunday with middle 60s to lower 70s. The rest of the week looks to see some chances of showers and thunderstorms at some point. We could see quite a bit of the activity during the nighttime hours but we can’t rule out any precipitation during the daylight hours either. Outside any chances of precipitation, the warm air will be returning to the state with readings back into the 70s and lower 80s across the state. Some of the storms during this period could become strong to possibly severe but this will all depend on certain factors such as daytime heating, cloud debris etc which could hamper any storm development at that time. We should know more by the end of the weekend.

NEXT WEEKEND INTO JUNE: The extended period still show some active weather around with seasonal readings as well. The GFS is showing a cold front that may come around the 30th that could bring some cooler air briefly before warming back up heading into June. There is no real trend setting up outside active weather but we’ll monitor the situation to see if we can begin to pinpoint any of this down in the coming days.
