Iowa Weather Report May 16th 2014

WARMING WEEKEND: It will be another cool day ahead with a chance of afternoon showers especially in our eastern counties of the state. Highs will be in the 50s to near 60 across the state with some partly to mostly sunny skies in the west with some peaks of sun also possible in the eastern counties during the day as well, outside any showers. Clear to partly cloudy skies will rule tonight as lows drop back into the 30s to near 40. We may see frost in the northern and northwestern counties of the state once more. This will likely be the last frost until the fall at this point. Readings on Saturday will be into the lower and middle 60s with partly to mostly sunny skies around. Sunday will be the best day of the weekend with mainly sunny skies and readings in the middle 60s to lower 70s from northeast to southwest.

WARMER WEEK: Monday will bring another storm system into the state with a chance of showers and thunderstorms at that time. Readings will be roughly the same as on Sunday with middle 60s to lower 70s across the area. Severe weather is not expected with these showers and storms on Monday. The front will stall across the state bringing with it a chance of showers and thunderstorms across the area. It’s too early to determine when these storms may form or if we may get a nocturnal MCS that could blow through but it’s entirely possible as this point. It is also too early to determine whether we could see some severe weather during the time that the front is stalled over the state. Readings will be warming further into the 70s and lower 80s on Tuesday through Thursday with some peaks of sunshine here and there outside any storms.

EXTENDED PERIOD: No real trends developing in the extended period which goes through the end of the month. The GFS is still showing an active weather pattern with several chances of showers and thunderstorms along with some seasonal temperatures mixed in as well. We’ll see if this trend continues in later model runs as well.
