Iowa Weather Report April 20th 2014

SOME RAIN CHANCES NEXT TWO DAYS: A frontal system will move into the state today and through the first half of Monday bringing with it a chance of some showers and thunderstorms. Most of the day will be dry in the southeastern third of the state with readings there in the 70s while the rest of the state will see shower and thunderstorm activity with highs in the 60s and 70s. The entire state has rain chances tonight with lows only dropping back into the 50s. The system will be on the way out here on Monday with the chances or showers and thunderstorms ending from west to east during the day. Readings will be in the upper 60s to lower 70s on Monday. Rainfall from this system looks to be the heaviest over the northwestern half of the state where a half to one inch of rain is possible. Some isolated higher totals could be evident as well.

ANOTHER SYSTEM: The next system will move into the state Wednesday and into Thursday with another chance of showers and thunderstorms. This looks to come in two waves, with one on Wednesday afternoon and another Thursday afternoon. We could see a break in the activity in between the two, but it’s still too early to pinpoint that at this time. Severe weather still looks possible but it is not as evident as it was a few days ago. It’s pretty much a wait and see with regards to this, but we’ll continue to monitor for any changes in the coming days. Rainfall from this system may range between a quarter to three quarters of an inch dependent on any thunderstorms that move through a given area.

INTO NEXT WEEKEND: Warm temperatures continue into next weekend, but another storm system will be approaching by next Sunday bringing with it another chance of some rainfall. Current thinking suggests that Saturday will be the best of the two days next weekend with sunshine and highs in the 60s and 70s. Next Sunday, clouds will be on the increase with a chance of showers and thunderstorms by the afternoon hours. Readings looks to remain near Saturday’s levels at least at this point. This system may last into the following week as well (Monday and Tuesday the 28th and 29th), but that’s more than a week away and may change.

WHAT WILL MAY BRING?: This model run is showing less activity than previous runs, however it continues to show near seasonal level temperatures for the first couple days of May. We still see nothing concrete yet with regards to any trends forming so we will have to wait for a few more runs before doing so.
