Iowa Weather Report April 9th 2014

VERY WARM TODAY: A much warmer day in store across the state with readings in the upper 60s in the eastern and northeastern counties to near 80 in the far west. With southwesterly winds and low relative humidity, there will be an increased risk of wildfires, thus a Red Flag Warning has been hoisted for a good portion of western Iowa. A cold front will move into the state late tonight into Thursday which may bring a very slight chance at a shower, although many areas may get by with little or nothing. Readings will drop back into the 60s on Thursday with partly to mostly sunny skies outside any showers that move through.

WEEKEND STORM: A disturbance may move through the state on Friday morning that may spark a shower but it doesn’t look to amount to much at this point. What does look to amount to much more is a storm that will be approaching on Saturday from the west. This will bring a chance of showers and thunderstorms Saturday afternoon into the evening and overnight. It’s still a bit early to determine if any of these storms could approach severe weather limits but we’ll continue to monitor this in the coming days. Sunday will bring some overrunning rain from the frontal system that will be to the south and southeast of the state. This will hold readings in the 50s for the most part.

COOL SPELL: Monday looks to be quite chilly across the state with many areas seeing highs in the 40s and lower 50s. Tuesday will be a bit warmer with upper 40s northeast to near 60 southwest with the winds swinging back around to the southwest. This will be ahead of the next storm system that will come in for the end of next week.

EVEN FARTHER OUT: Following the storm at the end of next week, the Model Run is showing a brief cool down for the first half of next weekend with readings possibly dropping back into the 40s and 50s before warming back up on Sunday back into the 50s and 60s across the state. Another storm toward the end of the period could bring another chance of rainfall as well but it’s much too early to pinpoint storms two weeks out but we’ll watch it.
