Iowa Weather Report March 17th 2014

ANOTHER STORM APPROACHES: Another sunny day and much warmer as well across the state with readings back into the upper 30s northeast to near 60 south and southwest. Clouds will be on the increase tonight ahead of the next storm system that will move into the state on Tuesday. This will bring a chance of some rain as readings will be in the 40s and 50s. However as we head into Tuesday night, the temperatures will drop and the rain will switch over to a rain snow mix across a good portion of the state. The precipitation may end as some light snow or flurries as the system pulls off to the east, although amounts are expected to remain rather light at this point. There may be some lingering flurries and clouds for quite a bit of the day on Wednesday as well with readings in the upper 30s and 40s across the state. Some parts of southern Iowa could break out into some sunshine, if that were to occur early enough, readings in the lower 50s would not be out of the question there.

HEADING TOWARD THE WEEKEND: The sun will return statewide on Thursday with readings back into the 40s and 50s across the state once again. Temperatures are expected to be similar on Friday as well, however another system will be moving in that may bring a chance of some rain during the day and possibly a rain snow mix at night. As of right now, amounts from this system look rather light but we’ll continue to monitor at this time. Slightly cooler air moves in for the weekend with readings on Saturday in the upper 30s north to upper 40s south. There will be partly to mostly sunny skies around with more clouds likely over the northern counties than the southern counties. Sunday will see a bit more sunshine around with readings still remaining in the upper 30s north to near 50 south. We may see a disturbance move in late Sunday night into Next Monday with some precipitation at that time.

FOOLING AROUND THROUGH APRIL FOOLS: The GFS Model Run continues to show a somewhat active period as we head into the last week of March with several systems in the offing that may bring some rain and or a wintry mix across the region. We have been seeing something to that effect over the last few days but nothing set in stone just yet. We’ll keep watch. Readings for the most part look to stay below seasonal levels for most of the time, however that won’t preclude a few days of getting to or even above them. Heading toward the first of April, the GFS shows a large system approaching from the west. If this were to verify, we would see the chance of some showers and thunderstorms at that time, but don’t expect this to be around for the next model run, at least for now.
