It’s Only March, and there’s a lot of winter left – Winter Weather Advisories for SE Iowa overnight

WINTER 3112014

The National Weather Service has issued Winter Weather Advisories for Appanoose, Davis, Des Moines, Lee, and Wayne counties from 10:00 PM tonight through tomorrow morning. A strong area of low pressure is expected to track south of the state tonight bringing light to moderate snowfall across south central and southeastern Iowa overnight.

The system should start out as primarily rain during the evening before switching to all-snow by midnight. The peak of the heavy snow should be 12am to 3am with continued light snow through the morning hours. Two to four inches can be expected with the heaviest amounts the farther south you go.

In combination with northeast winds of 15 to 30 MPH (with higher gusts), travel will be hazardous throughout the morning hours thanks to low visibility. There is potential for icy roads underneath the accumulating snowfall as well as precipitation refreezes. Nonetheless, travel will be dangerous in the morning and you should consider using extra time getting to your destination.
