Iowa Weather Report March 10th 2014

ONE MORE DAY: Another warm sunny day ahead across the state as more of the snowpack melts in areas that still have one. Readings today will range from the upper 40s northeast to perhaps the lower 70s out west. Sioux City hit 72 yesterday for a record high and they may get close again today. The record high for Sioux City today is 74 set in 1967. Clouds will be on the increase tonight as a storm moves in from the west. This may bring some wintry mix across our far northern and northwestern counties during the morning hours before through the rest of the state during the day on Tuesday. Some of the northern counties may stay with a wintry mix all day then switching to all snow before ending. The far southeastern counties are likely to see some sunshine on Tuesday to start before clouds increase by the afternoon hours with some precipitation likely coming in around sunset or so. Readings will vary wildly across the state with 30s in the north and northwest to the 50s in the southeast where sunshine will be seen for at least part of the day. The system will move through Tuesday night into early Wednesday with all of the precipitation changing over to all snow before ending. It’s a bit tricky to determine how much snow may fall from this system, but an inch or two is not out of the question at this time, but what will make it difficult is whether the heaviest of the precipitation will occur as snow, a wintry mix or plain rain. We will be able to better pinpoint by later today regarding this storm.

THROUGH THE WEEK: Wednesday will not be like Monday. There will be partly to mostly cloudy skies around with some slow clearing by late in the day. Readings will be in the lower 30s northeast to the lower and middle 40s southwest. Thursday will be warmer with sunshine back out fully with readings climbing back into the 40s and 50s across the state. Another front looks to come down on Friday which will cool readings only slightly with 40s north and lower and middle 50s south. Heading into Saturday clouds will be on the increase ahead of another storm that will be moving in from the west and northwest. Readings on Saturday look to range from the upper 30s in the north to near 50 south with partly sunny skies around. The system on Sunday which is much weaker and more ill-defined than it was yesterday may bring a chance of some snow or a wintry mix to our western and southwestern counties during the day. However, given the inconsistency with the model from run to run, we’ll wait for another couple models to go through before we have a definite trend on our hands.

SPRINGING INTO THE EXTENDED: The cooler weather looks to continue even into the following week as the flow will be coming out of the northwest bringing with it a storm or two, neither of which look too significant at this time. Temperatures look to moderate as we head toward the 22nd ahead of another storm around the 24th that may bring some rain to the state. This looks to be followed by more cool air coming in from the northwest. As of right now, there is no set trend during this period at this time, so most of these systems will be gone by the next model run.
