Iowa Weather Report March 7th 2014

DOWN AND UP: A cold front will move into the state today bringing with it some rain, sleet and some snow to the area. Any amounts are expected to be light at this point and shouldn’t cause much of any travel issues. Highs today will vary wildly across the state from the lower 30s in the north and northwest to the lower 50s in the southeastern counties where the sun will be out for quite a bit of the day before the clouds roll in. Tonight any precipitation will change over to some light snow before ending early Saturday morning. Accumulations of an inch or so are possible although some areas may get by with little if any snow. Lows will drop back into the single digits northwest to the middle and upper 20s in the southeastern counties. Saturday will be a totally different day. Some lingering snow showers will be possible in the southeastern counties through the morning hours before ending while the rest of the state partly to mostly sunny skies with readings in the 20s and 30s for highs. Sunday and Monday will be another different animal as the winds turn to the west and southwest and bump the readings up into the 40s and even some 50s across the state. As mentioned yesterday we will have to watch for possible ice jams on rivers as the river ice is expected to start breaking up with the warm weather Sunday and Monday. Prepare for any localized flooding in case you live near a river that does ice jam in your area.

BACK DOWN AGAIN: Another front comes down from the north on Tuesday which will bring some chances of some precipitation to the area. It’s a bit too early to determine the type of precipitation at this time but a wintry mix changing to all snow before ending looks to be the plausible bet at this point. Readings will still be near to slightly above seasonal levels on Tuesday but readings will be falling back below average on Wednesday to the upper 20s through the 30s across the state. Readings look to moderate briefly Thursday before another front comes through that will drop temperatures down once again especially in the eastern half of the state.

ON THROUGH THE IDES: The GFS is showing a clipper system that could scrape the northeastern counties of the state with some snow next Sunday (16th). Temperatures moderate once again ahead of a storm around the 18th through the 20th that could bring a plethora of weather to the area. We have been seeing this on other runs so while it’s not set in stone yet, it is something to watch over the next couple of days. Readings drop back after the storm passes off to the east before the next storm approaches from the west at the end of the period which will help to warm us up once again. One thing is for certain that the extended period does look quite active, but whether that stays the case is one thing we’ll have to watch.
