WELCOME TO MARCH: We have now made it to the start of Meteorological Spring. I think someone forgot to tell Mother Nature that as more snow and more cold weather are in store for the next couple days. As one storm is pulling out early today, the next one will be right on its heels spreading snow into the state by the afternoon hours. The heaviest snow will likely falling during the evening and overnight hours of tonight into Sunday morning before slowly tapering off. Snowfall amounts of 4-6” will be possible across our southern tiers of counties with isolated heavier totals, lighter amounts to the north. The snow will be moving out of the state by the morning hours of Sunday but some parts of far southern Iowa could see some light snow or flurry activity lasting even into the evening hours before ending. Highs today will be very cold with single digits in the north to the lower 20s down south. Sunday will be much colder with a few places up in the northern counties possibly not even getting above zero while the rest of the state will see single digits above zero to near 10.
NEXT WEEK: The new work week will start out very cold and sunny across the state. Readings Monday morning will be well below zero for most if not the entire state. We could easily see some records fall across the state. Highs Monday won’t rebound much, possibly into the single digits to near 20 across the state. The GFS is showing some weak disturbances that may move across the state on Tuesday and Wednesday which may bring us some light snow or flurries at that time. We’ll be able to pinpoint any possible accumulations once we get past this current storm, but as of now the snow Tuesday into Wednesday looks to be rather light at this time. Thereafter the temperatures will warm Thursday into Friday with readings back to and above freezing across the state. We could see some light fog especially Friday morning with any melting snow that does occur on Thursday. Friday could also bring some precipitation to the state with a cold front moving through. The precipitation may start as some rain or a wintry mix and end as snow Friday night into Saturday morning. We’ll be able to fine tune this forecast as we get closer to this event.
NEXT WEEKEND AND BEYOND: We have a brief shot of cold weather next week with a quick warm up Monday to near or slightly below seasonal levels. This too will be brief as the GFS shows an Alberta Clipper sweeping southeastward with some light snow or flurries Monday (10th) through early Tuesday (11th). The rest of the period looks to see near to slight below average readings but there’s no real trend showing up at this time for that so we’ll just have to wait for a few more model runs to see if we see one as we head toward the middle of March.
