Iowa Weather Discussion February 16th 2014

NO VIDEO due to technical issues regarding forecasting.

NEXT SYSTEM: The next system will move into the state late tonight through the day on Monday. There is still some question as how much will fall and what precipitation type it will be. Current thinking has that the precipitation will come in as some snow and or sleet to begin with Sunday night into Monday morning with it changing to some freezing rain in the far south, a mix of snow and sleet in the central portions of the state and will continue as snow in the north. Amounts of snow look to be heaviest closest to the Iowa Minnesota border where 3-5” could be possible in the far northeastern counties of the state with lesser amounts as you head south. Ice accumulations if any should only be a couple hundredths of an inch with some areas possibly getting up to a tenth of an inch.

ANOTHER SYSTEM OF FUN: After a few days where readings will be at or above seasonal levels, another storm comes in Thursday which may bring more rain, sleet, snow and perhaps even a rumble of thunder as well. It’s too early to determine amounts at this time but it does look comparable to the system tonight into Monday but the precipitation types will be different. We’ll have more time to monitor that system once we get the current one out by tomorrow night.

FARTHER OUT: We still see some cooler than average temperatures to end the month of February and begin the month of March. There are also several possible systems that may bring some precip to the state during that time as well, but we have seen very little consistency past 7 days so we’ll have to keep watching for any trends that may develop.
