ARCTIC BLAST ONCE MORE: Just when you thought the mornings of sub-zero temperatures were a thing of the past, well wake up and smell the cold arctic air because it’s still winter, it’s still February and the cold weather is returning. The snow will be pulling out during the morning hours in our eastern counties, but the wind will still be causing some blowing and drifting here and there. Readings will be in the single digits and teens but with the wind, the wind chill will be below zero all day. Tonight skies will begin to partially clear but that won’t keep the readings from dropping into the teens below zero across most of the state. Highs will struggle into the single digits above zero on Thursday with more sunshine around.
THROUGH THE WEEKEND: Friday morning will start out below zero statewide once again with readings rising into the single digits and teens across the state with plenty of sunshine around. The next system will move into the state on Saturday with some light snow to the state. This model run is indicating the heaviest accumulations would take place in the northern and eastern counties of the state but the most we could see out of this is perhaps an inch or two but this may still change so don’t take that to the bank. We could see some flurries in far southwestern Iowa Sunday night that won’t amount to a whole lot either. What will be fairly consistent is the temperatures which will remain below seasonal levels for the early part of February with highs in the teens and lower 20s through the weekend and lows in the single digits to around 10.
NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: The cold weather looks to continue into next week as well with a storm bypassing the state to the south Monday. We’ll see plenty of sunshine Monday and Tuesday. Going into the extended period, the model is showing several quick moving storms that could bring precipitation to the state at that time. The systems look to come once about every 2-3 days or so. Temperatures look to average near seasonal levels through the middle of the month with some cooler spells intermixed with warmer days. We’ll watch to see if any trends form as we move through the month.
