BITTER COLD RETURNS: Did everyone enjoy the warm weather on Saturday? Hope you did because we won’t be seeing anything like those readings for some time. Readings will generally be steady or falling throughout the day with a few flurries here and there, mainly in the morning into the early afternoon hours in the eastern half of the state. Tonight the temperatures will bottom out in the single digits and teens below zero. With some breeze around, this will generate wind chills in the 20s to possibly lower 30s below zero. This will be very dangerous to anyone that will be outside for any period of time. Another disturbance on Monday afternoon into Monday night could bring some light snow or a few flurries to the area. There doesn’t look to be much of any accumulation with this disturbance at this time.

FROM ONE YEAR TO THE NEXT: The cold air will still be in control across the state outside possibly the southwestern counties where little to no snow remains on the ground. Readings there may only be a few degrees below seasonal levels while the rest of the state will be well below those readings. New Year’s Eve Tuesday will bring another system through the state during the day into the evening and overnight hours with another chance of some light snow and flurries across the area. Highs will be in the single digits and lower teens in the northern and eastern counties while the southwestern counties may see some 20s around. A more vigorous system moves in later on New Year’s Day Wednesday. This could last into the early morning hours of Thursday as well. This model run shows that this system could bring some accumulating snows to the state, possibly several inches. It’s still too early to pinpoint actual totals at this time, but this will be a system we will have to watch in future model runs over the next few days. Temperatures will remain seasonally cold through at least Friday when some moderation is expected to take place albeit short as another clipper system will move in on Saturday bringing another shot of colder air in behind it.

THE MIDST OF JANUARY: Very active weather is in the extended period with several possible significant events occurring almost back to back. The GFS is showing a storm that will come through the area on the 6th and 7th that could bring a plethora of precipitation to the state at that time. Another system on the 9th and 10th could bring more snow to the state at that time. This could be followed by very cold air will follow the system and if this model run is right, it could be the coldest air we’ve seen in quite a while with a 1064mb coming southward out of Canada into Montana. Another system toward the end of the forecast may bring more snow to the state as well.
