THIS WEEKEND: The beginning of the weekend will see partly to mostly sunny skies with readings in the single digits NW through the teens elsewhere. There will be an increase in the cloudiness throughout the day. Tonight some light snow will move across the area and will last through the day Sunday into Sunday night. Accumulations at this time look to be light with 1-3” possible across the state with some isolated totals approaching 4” in the northwestern counties. The far southeastern counties may get less than an inch but enough to at least cover the ground. Highs on Sunday with the clouds and snow around will be in the teens north through the 20s south.

MORE COLD AIR: The cold air returns for the beginning of the new work week. Readings will struggle to reach the teens with lows near or below zero. Skies will be partly to mostly sunny. The model is trying to bring in some flurries on Wednesday but it looks to be more clouds than anything. Temperatures will begin to rise toward the end of the week to near seasonal levels with most of the activity remaining just to the north of the state.

EXTENDED PERIOD: This model run looks similar to the run yesterday of a somewhat less active pattern as we head toward Christmas Day. It is showing a clipper like system around the middle of the month that may bring some light snow across, a more significant storm around the 18th and 19th that could bring some snow mainly over the southeastern half of the state. The GFS shows a moderation in temperatures to above average at the end of the period, but we’ll have to see if this continues on future runs.
