RAINY/SNOWY: Rain will move into the state today and some of it could become moderate to heavy at times. There shouldn’t be any thunder with this system, but we can’t really rule it out close to the Iowa Missouri border at this point. In the far northwestern counties of the state, the precipitation may begin as rain and quickly change over to a wintry mix or all snow. A few inches are possible up there with a Winter Weather Advisory in effect there. The rain will gradually end from west to east during the overnight hours into Wednesday morning. The precipitation may end as a wintry mix northwest of a line from Omaha to Carroll to Mason City line by Wednesday morning. Highs today will range from the mid to upper 30s in the northwestern counties to near 60 in the far southeast. As the front sweeps across the state Wednesday, the eastern counties may see early day highs in the 40s to lower 50s before seeing readings fall back into the 30s by evening and 20s by Thursday morning.

INTO THE NEXT WEEKEND: Thursday will be cool with readings into the 40s across the state, somewhat cooler in areas of northwestern Iowa that may have a snowpack. Friday will see temperatures moderating back to near or over 50 degrees at that point. Saturday sees another quick moving storm system that may bring rain and snow to the state at that time. This storm in prior runs was missing the state to the north, but in this run it’s a bit farther south and has a bit more moisture with it, so we’ll have to keep an eye on that for any potential accumulations that may occur late on Saturday. Sunday looks to be dry with readings in the 40s to lower 50s (possibly cooler if we do see any snow from the prior system on Saturday)

AS FAR AS I CAN SEE: Another storm next Tuesday and Wednesday could bring some significant rainfall to the state at that time, doesn’t look like snow will be an issue with that one, but we’ll have to wait and see more model runs to determine that. Toward the end of the model run, a cold blast from Canada comes in around the 19th and lasts through the end of the period. We’ll have to keep an eye on that as well.
