Low pressure is expected to bring a mix of snow and rain across the state late tonight and into Tuesday morning. Precipitation is expected to begin around midnight across northwest Iowa, before spreading northeast. Precipitation is expected to begin to briefly fall as a mix before changing to all snow across the area. Precipitation across the state is expected to continue into the morning hours with the heaviest of snowfall in the daybreak hours. Snowfall amounts across the state are expected to be generally small, with 1-3″ the common forecast prediction with totals up to 4″ possible from Franklin to Benton counties. Localized higher amounts are possible. With trees still having leafs on them, snowfall may accumulate quickly creating the possibility of tree damage of falling tree limbs. Power outages and hazardous road conditions are also possible. Use extra caution.

Another weather hazard that we should mention is that Freeze Warnings and Frost Advisories are in effect east central and southeastern Iowa for later tonight. A dry air mass is allowing temperatures to drop rapidly around sunset with lows in the mid 20’s to low 30’s. Clouds associated with the storm system mentioned above will move into the area prior to daybreak but temperatures below freezing are likely in the warned area. Sub-freezing temperatures will kill crops and other sensitive vegetation. Take precautions.
