SEVERE STORMY SKIES: It’s going to be a rather bumpy ride over the next 48-60 hours across the state with numerous rounds of showers and thunderstorms, some of which could become strong to severe at times. There is a slight risk of severe weather for today and tonight for portions of central into western Iowa extending back into central Nebraska. The main threats look to be from large hail and damaging winds, although a tornado can’t be ruled out especially along the Missouri River Valley in western and southwestern Iowa. There is also a slight risk of severe weather for Friday and Friday night for all but the far southeastern counties of the state. All modes of severe weather will be possible with this, including large hail, damaging winds and a few tornadoes. Some uncertainty with this will be what happens with the activity that forms later today into tonight as to where the storms may set up for Friday. The main window for severe weather today looks to be between 2pm and 10pm, with Friday’s activity taking place anytime between 1pm and Midnight. Anyone heading to the Iowa State Texas game at Jack Trice in Ames tonight will need to be sure you have a way of getting warnings while at the game or tailgating. Same goes for anyone that will be going to any high school football games on Friday. There is a good likelihood that these storms will be quick movers, so once a warning is issued no matter what it is, you may not have a lot of time to react before the storm arrives in any given area. Rainfall could also become an issue with amounts possibly reaching 2-3″ plus across the area, especially for areas that get repeated rounds of showers and thunderstorms over the next few days. This run of the GFS is much slower than previous runs and still has the front moving through the eastern counties of the state at midday on Saturday. It’s too early to tell if there could be some severe weather on Saturday in the far eastern counties, but it’s a bit doubtful as the low pressure center will likely be starting to fill over southern Minnesota. In any case stay tuned to the blog or the Facebook page for any changes to the forecast.

INTO NEXT WEEK: The pattern is much drier for next week with slowly moderating temperatures. Readings will climb back into at least the 70s perhaps getting close to 80 once again as southerly winds take hold by the middle of next week. This will be ahead of a frontal system that looks to move into the state late Thursday but with most of the energy shunted to our north, there will be little more than a few clouds or perhaps an isolated shower with the system.

LOOKING ON OUT: Another storm looks to move through from the 12th (Saturday) through early on the 14th (Monday) with a decent chance of seeing some showers and perhaps a few thunderstorms as well. Another weaker system moves through around the 17th and 18th as well with a few showers. Other than that, temperatures look to remain near seasonal levels in the extended period with some cool downs and warm ups intermixed, but things can and are likely to change.
