THIS WEEK: Another threat of shower and thunderstorm activity today mainly in the afternoon and evening hours across the state. The Storm Prediction Center has a slight risk of severe weather for a good portion of northeastern through central into southwestern Iowa today and tonight. The main risks will be from large hail and damaging straight line winds. The storms may form in the northwestern counties during the early to mid afternoon hours and sweep quickly to the southeast into a MCS. Some heavy rainfall is possible with this system although WPC doesn’t seem to think so, only bringing us a quarter to half inch. There could be isolated heavier totals given what fell yesterday in some areas, so it won’t be a one amount storm by any means. Tuesday and Wednesday look rather dry and comfortable for RAGBRAI or anything else you plan on doing outdoors with highs a few degrees either side of 80. Another storm moves in on Thursday which looks to stick around through the end of the week and into the weekend with another chance of some shower and thunderstorm activity at that time.
BEYOND THAT: The GFS wants to build the ridge back up just off to our south and southwest as we head into the month of August. However the westerlies are close enough that there still would be a chance of seeing some showers and thunderstorms from time to time that would squelch the heat down for a day or two. We’ll watch to see if this pattern continues as the extended period begins to draw ever closer to the beginning of State Fair.
