These two types of flooding are confusing to many people. We get this exact question asked a lot. Let’s clarify!
A Flash Flood Warning is issued when very heavy and intense rainfall occurs over a short period of time. This results in creeks and streams quickly rising out of their banks. Dangerous flooding in these areas as well in low lying areas will cause a significant threat to life and property, hence why the Flash Flood Warning was issued.
A Areal Flood Warning is issued when flooding develops when light to moderate rainfall is prolonged and gradual over a long period of time. Ponding of water in low lying areas and small creeks and streams. Even though that this is more gradual, a significant threat to life and property can still exist.
A Areal Flood Advisory, sometimes called an Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory, is issued when flooding develops but does not carry a threat to life or property. This is usually issued for low drainage areas and low lying areas where the flooding isn’t necessarily a threat but moreso an nuisance.
