WARMING UP: Temperatures will trend upward the rest of the week, along with that will come some added humidity to make it feel more like summer should be. This will also bring some chance of showers and thunderstorms to the state as well on a isolated to scattered basis beginning Thursday and lasting through the weekend. Highs today will be a couple degrees either side of 80 across the state. Thursday will be a bit warmer by 3-5° with lower to middle 80s possible. Rain chances look to end Sunday with a frontal system moving through the state. It won’t really bring much cooler air to the state as a ridge will begin to dissolve the front as it moves to the east (as the current GFS run shows) Some of the storms during this period could become strong to severe with the main threats being from strong gusty winds and some large hail.

SLIGHT BREAK: The warm air will break for a day or two early next week as a broad trough with a system moves just to our north. This may squeeze out a shower or storm late Monday into Tuesday but shouldn’t amount to a whole lot at this time. Some areas may get by with no rain at all. The heat looks to return toward the end of next week.

DROUGHT RETURNING: The heat ridge looks to take control in the extended period over most of the southern 2/3rds of the country including Iowa. This would keep storm systems from approaching, keep the Gulf Of Mexico closed to any moisture flow and temperatures soaring well into the 90s. If this was to pan out, we could be looking at a week or more of very warm and very dry weather. This means any rain that falls in the next week could be the last bit of moisture until perhaps the first week of July if not longer. Let’s hope this trend does NOT continue.
