WXUPDATE: Catastrophic Flooding Event on Queue, Severe Weather possible Later Tonight (MODERATE RISK FOR EXTREME SW IOWA)

Green means Elevated, Yellow means Moderate

The primary headline to highlight here is the significant flash flooding & river flooding potential across Iowa tonight. Many areas across Central Iowa have already had 6-8″  of rain in the past days, with some areas reaching nearly 10″. Combined with more rain today, flash flooding will easily be possible, along with many rivers rising over its banks. This is the primary reason that the National Weather Service have issued Flash Flood Watches for the majority of the state. This could possibly be a catastrophic event. For those that know me well, the usage of “catastrophic” is a term I tend not to use often. Nearly every river has been put into a Flood Warning, and multiple counties are under either Flash Flood or Areal Flood Warnings. I urge you to remember: Driving into Flooded Roads can easily sweep you off the road. Turn around, don’t drown.

Along with this, the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma has posted a Elevated Risk for Severe Weather across the state for tonight. All of the ingredients for severe weather are coming together, including an unstable airmass along with decent shear, will all be triggers for storms this evening. All modes will be possible, primarily flash flooding, but large hail, damaging winds, and a few tornadoes will be possible later tonight.

We will likely have live coverage this afternoon for the flooding threat. Stay tuned to the Iowa Weather Network for the latest information.
