STORMY SKIES AWAIT: A cold front will move south of the state today bringing much cooler conditions to the state with regards to the incredible readings that were seen yesterday across the western and central counties of the state. Sioux City hit its all time record high for the month of May yesterday with 106°, but it will be down into the upper 70s and lower 80s there and the rest of the state today as the cooler air will have moved in. There still could be an outside of a shower or storm across the far south late tonight through Thursday as the front slowly starts to move back north. The chances increase Thursday night statewide into Friday as the front moves through. Saturday looks mainly dry now as the the storm approaching from the west has slowed slightly and won’t move in at least until Sunday. This system will last at least through Monday across the area perhaps longer if the GFS is right. There is a chance that there could be some severe weather with this system but still too early to pinpoint a good location at this time with some subtle model differences. We’ll have to keep a close eye on this storm over the next few days for any changes to the forecast, strength and possible severe weather that could effect the area.

END OF MONTH: GFS is showing a ridge building across the Plains into the upper Midwest around the Memorial Day weekend holiday. This would bring much warmer temperatures to the state along with much drier weather. It looks to break down toward the end of the month with a frontal system approaching. We’ll need to monitor for any trends that continue in the extended.
