HOT AND DRY: A hot day in store across the state with temperatures in the 80s to mid 90s. With the breezy conditions, this will cause a high fire danger across the western and central counties of the state. Red Flag Warnings and Fire Weather Watches are in effect in those areas. A cold front will move into the state late tonight into Wednesday with a very slight chance of a shower or storm (didn’t include the chance on forecast). Most areas however will remain dry. Temperatures will trend down into the 70s to near 80 Wednesday through the end of the week.

ACTIVE WEATHER AHEAD: The front will move just to the south of the state and stall Wednesday night. It may be close enough that far southern Iowa could catch a stray shower or storm Wednesday night into Thursday before the front begins to slowly move back northward ahead of the next storm system approaching from the west. Friday will see some shower and thunderstorm activity across the state as the front lifts back north across the state. There could be a break in the action on Saturday during the morning into early afternoon hours before the chances increase again that night into Sunday and Monday. Severe weather is possible with this system as SPC has outlooked the area in their extended forecasts. We’ll need another day or two to get a better grasp with the situation late this week into the weekend.

INTO THE EXTENDED: The GFS is showing a ridge developing across the Plains in about 10 days time, this would bring warmer temperatures to the area, and keep precipitation below average across the state. A system around Memorial Day weekend could bring a shower or storm around, but with the Gulf of Mexico shut off due to the ridge to our south, the chances would look slight at this time.
