Blizzard in late March? That’s a usual for Iowa – but last year, we were seeing completely different weather!

From severe weather to record highs, Iowa saw it all. Highs reached the mid to upper 80’s in some areas, record lows were seen in the mid 60’s, and a slight risk of severe weather was forecasted from Iowa all the way to Texas. That’s all going to change tomorrow, where high winds and light to moderate snow will create blizzard-like conditions in the northern portion of the state.

 

 

The National Weather Service has issued a BLIZZARD WARNING (orange) and WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY (purple) forNortheastern through Northwestern Iowa from late tonight into tomorrow evening. Light to moderate snow, heavy at times, will begin to make its way into Iowa later tonight alongside a weak low pressure system passing through the upper midwest. This combined with 35-40 mph winds will lead to dangerous travel for most of the overnight and day tomorrow.

Accumulations are expected to be fairly light in the 2-3″ range, with the heaviest totals being seen in North Central Iowa. That may not seem like a whole lot, but here’s the kicker. Winds are expected to be in the 25-30 MPH range (gusting to 45 mph at times), which will easily kick up any snow, light or heavy. All of these things will lead to poor road conditions and likely school delays. Bottom line….stay inside, and if you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you.
