UPDATED: Winter Storm beginning to roll through Iowa

A large winter storm has began to enter Eastern Nebraska and Western Iowa, leaving up to 8-9″ of snow in some places.

A large low pressure system is beginning to move its way into Western Iowa. A mixture of rain and possibly freezing rain will begin in the morning hours Sunday and transition into snow later in the afternoon. Moderate to Heavy snow combined with 25-30 MPH winds overnight Sunday and into the early morning hours Monday will create near blizzard conditions and very hazardous road conditions.

For all of these reasons, the National Weather Services in the Western part of the state have issued Winter Storm Watches and Winter Weather Advisories for the majority of Northern through South Central Iowa.

Snowfall accumulations will be the worst across the watch area. 4-8″ of snow is forecast across the watch area, with 2-5″ across the advisory area. The highest of accumulations will likely be seen from Story County to Fayette county where we might see 7-8″ in these areas (with locally higher amounts). The lowest amounts will be seen across the Northwestern, Southwestern, and Southeastern portions of Iowa. As I said, all of this, combined with 25-30 MPH winds will create very dangerous travel.
