It looks like mother nature isn’t happy with the winter storm we got Thursday into Friday. So, she sent another one.

A low pressure system will move across Southeastern Iowa on Monday night, creating chances of snow for most of Iowa. But I didn’t say it would be a lot. A similar setup to Thursday and Friday will bring dry air into most of Iowa eliminating significant snowfall totals for the majority of us. However, the Southeastern side of the system, the dry air should limit itself, therefore providing easier access for moisture from the Gulf, in which, in this  case, will be snow.

This moisture should make its way into  South Central, Southeastern, and a portion of East Central Iowa Tuesday into Wednesday, bringing with it moderate to heavy snowfall during the day Tuesday. Accumulations should be fairly light with about the usual 1-4″ for Northwest through Central Iowa. However, heavier totals of 4-6″ will be seen from South Central through East Central with even heavier totals in the Southeastern portion of the state.

Another similarity to the Thursday and Friday system will be the very well-defined northerly edge of the system which will basically put one inch of snow in one city while farther south they will see heavier amounts. Where exactly that will be placed at is currently in-the-air, but it will likely be put somewhere within South-Central or Southeastern Iowa.

For all of these reasons, the National Weather Service offices in Des Moines and the Quad Cities have issued WINTER STORM WATCHES AND WARNINGS as well as Winter Weather advisories for the majority of Southeastern Iowa and portions of East Central and South Central Iowa, which will go into effect Tuesday morning and expire in the early morning hours on Wednesday. The areas under a WINTER STORM WARNING should receive the heaviest of snowfall totals (6-8″), while areas farther NW will receive lighter totals. (see graphic)

Bottom line… the last winter storm for a while will hit the area Tuesday into Wednesday. Travel difficulties and cancellations will be likely during the day Tuesday. Just stay inside if possible, and if traveling, use extra caution. Stay tuned to the Iowa Weather Network for more information.

A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Adair, Adams, Appanoose, Black Hawk, Clarke, Dallas, Davis, Decatur, Grundy, Jasper, Lucas, Madison, Mahaska, Marion, Marshall, Monroe, Polk, Poweshiek, Ringgold, Story, Tama, Taylor, Union, Wapello, Warren and Wayne counties until 12:00 PM Wednesday.

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Benton, Buchanan, Cedar, Clinton, Delaware, Dubuque, Iowa, Jackson, Johnson, Jones, Keokuk, Linn and Washington counties until 6:00 AM Wednesday.

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Audubon, Boone, Bremer, Butler, Cass, Franklin, Greene, Guthrie, Hamilton and Hardin counties until 12:00 PM Wednesday.

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Fremont, Montgomery and Page counties until 4:00 PM.
