AHEAD TO THE WEEKEND: The weather will be fairly calm and cold again today into tonight with highs today in the teens and 20s most places, except for southwest Iowa which may get into the lower 30s. Tonight temperatures drop into the single digits above and below zero again. Saturday will be cooler with upper teens and lower 20s east to lower 30s out west. Sunday is what we’re looking toward right now with a system coming in from the southwest. Warm air will overrun the cold air near the surface and some freezing rain, sleet and perhaps some snow will break out across the state. The best chance of seeing freezing rain looks to be between 2am and 10am Sunday across the state. Some areas in the northeastern counties may see the precipitation start out as snow before switching to freezing rain or sleet by sunrise. During the day most places will get above freezing thus the precipitation will changeover to some light rain. Areas in northeast and northern Iowa could see freezing rain continuing most of the day dependent on surface temperatures.
COLD SHOT: Monday and Tuesday will be warm with readings in the 30s and 40s, but it won’t last long as another shot of cold air from the northwest arrives Wednesday and with it comes some breezy winds out of the northwest. Wednesday could see temperatures dropping through the day into the single digits and teens by nightfall. The rest of the upcoming week looks cold and fairly dry with perhaps a chance of a few flurries or light snow showers toward next weekend.
