Hurricane Sandy which has transitioned into a nor’easter is making landfall this evening on the southern tip of New Jersey, close to Cape May. This storm has caused major storm surge all along the east coast from North Carolina to Maine. Battery Park in lower Manhattan in NYC has experienced record storm surge and it continues to go up as I type this. Power is being turned off in Lower Manhattan, power flashes have been reported in New Jersey. LaGuardia Airport in NYC has had water on its runways earlier today. Many of the airports are closed or have suspended operations for tonight and tomorrow, including Newark, JFK and LaGuardia, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore-Washington, Washington Dulles, Washington Reagan, Cleveland and Boston-Logan just to name a few.
Blizzard conditions are likely in the mountains of West Virginia and North Carolina from this storm. They will likely be measuring this in feet when all said and done. There will be massive flooding not only in coastal areas from the storm surge but from the tremendous amounts of rain that are possible if not likely across the area. This storm will continue to stick around the mid-Atlantic and New England for a few more days as it weakens and begins to drift into Canada later this week. For anyone that can help, please make donations to the Red Cross for disaster relief. They will certainly appreciate all that you can do in the aftermath of this storm.
Iowa’s impacts are minimal to none with only a few clouds and perhaps a little bit breezier tomorrow in the eastern counties.
