SEVERE WEATHER TODAY: The Storm Prediction Center has issued a slight risk of severe weather for mainly late this afternoon and into the evening and overnight hours for all but the far southeastern counties of the state. The main threats will be from large hail and damaging straight line winds. The cold front of which these storms will be firing along and ahead of, will be moving into the state late this afternoon toward the evening hours. It may just reach Des Moines around the time the Fair will be closing for the night so be aware anyone that may be going to the fair to be aware of that possibility after 10pm or so.

COOLER AIR TO END: The week will close and head into the weekend with much cooler and drier air across the state with temperatures mainly in the 70s with a few places staying in the upper 60s especially in northern and northeastern Iowa on Friday and Saturday. A slow warm up into next week to near average with continued sunshine will grace the state at that time.

REMAINING SOMEWHAT ACTIVE: Given the last two months where the word “active” used in weather terms seems to have been buried under stacks of the latest burn bans or drought forecasts, looks to be given new light over the next few weeks with continued chances of showers and thunderstorms through the end of the month with no real extreme heat, although a ridge will try as it might to move in our direction, but the GFS still puts us in a northwesterly flow with several possible chances of showers and thunderstorms every few days or so. Let’s hope this pattern continues a little while longer.

NOTE: Iowa Forecast Videos will be DISCONTINUED AND REPLACED with a new exciting Video Series on August 20th.
