Severe WX Awareness Week: Flash Flooding

With Severe Weather Awareness Week beginning today, each day we will be focusing on different topics. Today, our main focus is flash flooding.

Each year, Flash Flooding causes nearly 150 fatalities per year, putting it into the #1 spot on the “Most Fatalities per Year” list.
Flash Flooding is normally caused by slow moving storms producing heavy rainfall. This can lead to rivers and creeks flooding fast, especially in low lying areas.
As the National Weather Services says many times if you encounter a flooded road, “Turn around, Don’t Drown!”.
Below you can see some of the definitions of the Flash Flooding alerts that the National Weather Service sends out.

Flash Flood Warning: Flooding is immanent or occurring. Prepare to follow safety guidelines if needed.
Flash Flood Watch: Flooding is possible in the next 48 hours. Follow safety guidelines.
Flash Flood Emergency: Flash Flooding is immanent in multiple places and has a significantthreat to life and property. Follow safety guidelines immediately and follow safety official’s instruction if evacuations are needed.
Evacuation Immediate: An evacuation order has been issued by your city. Stay tuned to your cities officials for the latest information.
