WEEKEND STORM UPDATE: The latest on the probable winter storm this weekend is that the main band of snow looks to set up from Omaha to Mason City. Amounts are likely to be in the 2-4″ range with some isolated totals up to 5″. Across areas southeast of a Bedford to Des Moines to Dubuque line, rain will be the main story for much of the day on Saturday. It will change to a mix, then to snow overnight before ending Sunday morning. Accumulations of any snow SE of said line are likely to be a dusting to a half inch. Far southeast Iowa may get by with only a few flurries without any accumulations. See video for the full projections from the NAM, GFS and from HPC.
COLD DECEMBER AIR: It’s meteorological winter, it has to get cold and it will after the storm moves on. Readings will come down into the 20s for highs with lows in the single digits and teens. Readings will slowly climb back into the 30s before another surge late next week drops readings back into the 20s. Right now there doesn’t look to be any more active storm systems after this weekend’s at least in the next two weeks. Note, Christmas is only 3 weeks from Sunday.
