HEAT DEPARTURE: This will be the last day of the heat wave across the state with a cold front moving through today. Showers and thunderstorms will develop along the front and may become severe. The Storm Prediction Center has outlooked a slight risk of severe weather for today and tonight across a large portion of the state. The main threats will be from large hail and damaging winds, although an isolated tornado can’t be ruled out (although shear values will be low). Highs today will be slightly cooler than the previous two days with highs in the mid 80s NW to lower to mid 90s SE.

COOL RAINY ARRIVAL: Tomorrow will be nothing like today, with temperatures in the 70s and chances of showers and thunderstorms all day. Severe weather is possible across the southern counties of the state. The cooler weather will last through the weekend before the hot humid weather returns for the early to middle part of next week.

MO RIVER FLOODING: The river continues to rise across the western part of the state. The crest is still a week or more away from Sioux City on downstream. Some locations are likely to see another 3-5 feet rise from where the river is now. Amtrak announced suspension of the line from Denver to Chicago due possible flooding at Omaha. Several roads could be impacted as well. I-29, US 275 and IA Hwy 333 near Hamburg could close if the levee there has a full breach (the breach a few days ago has been repaired temporarily). Interstate 29 around Council Bluffs and from Crescent to Loveland may flood along with I-680 near the river, IA Hwy 2 near the river and IA Hwy 127 near Mondamin. Other parts of Interstate 29 could flood with there are more levee breaches. Never enter a road that is covered with water. Turn Around Don’t Drown!!!
