All of Iowa, Severe Weather

Waiting Game

As morning has shifted to afternoon, we continue to wait for showers and thunderstorms to begin to fire across the midwest. The Significant Tornado Parameter (STP) numbers have come up with readings over 5 in parts of SE Iowa (Anything over 1-2 is considered significant), CAPE values are still in the 750-1500 J/kg, but the strong capping layer is still in place. The cap may be what keeps the state out of the severe weather threat today as it looks like it will be weakening just as the cold front moves out of the state taking the severe weather with it. Currently the cold front is over western Iowa, where the sun is shining and temperatures have already climbed into the lower and middle 70s.
