River Flooding A Concern

The Spring River Flooding Season is in underway as snowmelt across Minnesota and the Dakota’s moves south along the state’s rivers and streams. The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls has issued a Flood Watch for River Flooding for the Big Sioux River at Hawarden and Akron, the Rock River at Rock Rapids, the Little Sioux River at Spencer and Linn Grove and the Des Moines River at Jackson MN. NWS Des Moines has hydrologic outlooks on the Des Moines River at Emmetsburg and Estherville along with the East Fork Des Moines at Algona, and the Winnebago River at Mason City. The NWS in La Crosse also has outlooks along the Upper Iowa River at Decorah and Dorchester and the Cedar River at Charles City. Any rain that falls over the next 1-2 weeks will increasing the flooding risk in these areas and downstream. Also a flood is possible along the Mississippi River within the next 2-4 weeks as the snow continues to melt.
