Winter vs Spring for New Years Eve

It will be a battle of the seasons as a cold front moves into the state late tonight through Friday. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 6am Friday morning until 6pm Friday evening for the following counties, Adams, Audubon, Calhoun, Carroll, Cass, Crawford, Emmet, Greene, Guthrie, Hancock, Humboldt, Kossuth, Palo Alto, Pocahontas, Sac, Taylor, Webster, Winnebago, Wright, Adair, Boone, Bremer, Butler, Cerro Gordo, Dallas, Franklin, Grundy, Hamilton, Hardin, Story and Worth. There is also a Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 6am Friday morning until 6am Saturday morning for Buena Vista, Cherokee, Clay, Dickinson, Ida, OBrien, Osceola, Plymouth and Woodbury counties. Lyon and Sioux Counties are under a Winter Storm Warning from 6am Friday until 6am Saturday. A Winter Weather Advisory is also in effect from Noon on Friday until Midnight Saturday morning for Chickasaw, Floyd, Howard, Mitchell, Fayette, Winneshiek and Allamakee. Monona County has a Winter Weather Advisory beginning at 6pm tonight and lasting until 6pm Friday evening, while Harrison, Mills, Pottawattamie, Shelby, Fremont, Montgomery and Page counties have a Winter Weather Advisory beginning at Midnight and lasting until the New Year rings in!.

Snowfall accumulations will be rather light southeast of a Denison to Algona line, with areas NW of that seeing as much as 4-6″ especially in Lyon and Sioux counties. In the Winter Weather Advisory areas, freezing rain and sleet will be the main issue through the day on Friday as colder air mixes in with the warm air that continues to flood the state. Ice accumulations of a tenth to two tenths of an inch will be possible, however there is a chance of a few isolated thunderstorms that may bring totals higher. All precipitation should end early Saturday morning as colder and much more typical temperatures move back in.
