This storm that is starting to effect the state today will likely give a white christmas to everyone in the state of Iowa this year. Looking at the snowpack map above, it shows that some places in southern Iowa have no snow on the ground (or only in sheltered areas such as ditches or shadowy places that don’t get a lot of sun in the winter), while some locales in northern Iowa have a snow depth well over a foot, with some places in southern Minnesota approaching 2 feet of snow. Widespread 2-5″ totals will be common by the time the storm winds down late Christmas eve. Isolated heavier totals are possible as well.
